Douglas Howe

Douglas Lee Howe (1945 - 2013)

On July 16, 2013 we lost our dear husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend to all.  Douglas Lee Howe was born on November 9, 1945 to Melba Lillian Wallin and Clinton Lee Howe in Salt Lake City, UT.  He was the second of five children and spent most of his childhood in Utah.

While training in the military and attending Weber State University Doug met the love of his life, Marilyn Ann Child. They were married on May 18, 1968.  They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.  Throughout their marriage they were blessed with six children and ten grandchildren.

Doug graduated with a degree in Microbiology and Chemistry.  He spent his career in the food industry where he developed many bakery products for large companies throughout the world.  He was a faithful member of the LDS Church, happily serving in many callings.

Doug loved adventure and watching the stars at night. But, he found the greatest pleasures in life surrounded by his family and friends.  His sister, Kathy, recently described him as, "Boy is he a character!  He has a keen wit, always using puns and double entendres. He also never meets a person as a stranger.  He treats them as though they've been his friend forever.  He is a very kind man!"

He will be missed by all of those who have survived him including his wife Marilyn Ann Child Howe SLC, UT; children: Angela Howe SLC, UT., Terina Perfili (Dana Chapman) Layton, UT., Jeremy D. Howe (Kimberly) Moreno Valley, CA., LeAnna Hamblin (Bradley) Clearfield, UT., and Rebecca S. Howe Layton, UT.; brothers: David Howe (Joyce), AZ., Roger Howe (Georgia) MI,; sisters: Kathy Stott (Dennis), SLC, UT., and Julie Carlson (Scott), SLC, UT. His many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and those who knew him as Daddy Doug will also miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents and oldest daughter, Tamara.

The family is deeply grateful to all of his friends who cared for him at Avalon Care Center in Bountiful.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 20, 2013 11:00 a.m. at the Valley View 12th Ward, 2125 E. Evergreen Ave Salt Lake City, UT. Friends and family may visit Friday July 19th 6-8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary and Saturday 9:30-10:30 at the ward house.

Interment by Wasatch Lawn Mortuary 3401 S. Highland Dr. Salt Lake City, UT 84106.
In lieu of flowers please make donation in Doug's memory to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, online at www.alzfdn.org

Dad, thank you for giving us the moon and stars.  We love you.

Doug lived just around the corner from our home near Evergreen Jr. High.  I was very much saddened to see that he passed away this year and that I didn't get an opportunity to reaquaint with him after the last five decades.  He was six days older than I.  It makes my mortality even more striking.  I'm so glad that he was surrounded by a great and loving family.
